This coffee comes from Ethiopia’s Oromia Regional State, home of the Oromo people.
This Buku Abel heirloom tree varietal began garnering wider attention when it won first place in the natural processed coffee category of AFCA ToH Ethiopia (Taste of Harvest Ethiopia), https://afca.coffee/african-taste-of-harvest/ four years in a row from 2015 – 2018.
The name of this tree varietal is derived from the name of the village it was discovered near, Buku Abel, set at 2,300 meters above sea level. The coffee trees are often interspersed between banana trees for shade and which supports additional crop resources to the farmers. The extremely high altitude’s cooler climate creates a slow maturation process resulting in smaller cherry sizes similar to the Mokka tree varietals. There are taste attributes quite similar to Yemen Mokka as well. The processed green coffees are very dense, typical of high altitude coffees which we coffee roasters love.
